This four-day ceramics workshop is an introduction to the basic techniques of hand-building with clay. It is designed for beginners and for those with little or no previous experience with ceramics.
 
You will be introduced to different types of clay, basic ceramics tools and three fundamental hand-building techniques: pinch, coil and slab construction.
 
The workshop begins with an introduction to the material and the basic processes involved in making ceramics. We will show you how to prepare and work with clay, build and shape a vessel, trim it, and dry it properly before firing. We will also explain the different stages of firing, including bisque and glaze firing, and introduce you to our ceramics kiln.
 
During the practical part of the workshop, you will work with all three hand-building techniques while developing a form of your own. The aim is to understand how an idea can be translated into a physical object and how different techniques affect the shape and character of the finished piece.
 
You will also be introduced to the basics of glazing and the use of underglazes, so you can develop the surface and colour of your work.
 
The course takes place over four days:
 
Day one: 3 hours
Introduction to clay, tools and hand-building techniques.
 
Day two: 2 hours
Further work on your pieces and an introduction to finishing and drying.
 
Day three: 3 hours
Open Studio Session for continuing your work.
 
Day four: 3 hours
Open Studio Session for completing your pieces and preparing them for firing.
All clay, tools, glazing and firings are included.
