Learn to make your own traditional matcha set at Estet Studo.
In this workshop, you will create a chawan, the Japanese bowl used for preparing and drinking matcha, using the Kurinuki technique.
Kurinuki is an intuitive way of creating ceramics. Rather than building the vessel from separate pieces of clay, you will begin with a solid block and carve and shape the bowl from within. The movements and decisions made during the process remain imprinted in the finished piece, giving each chawan its own character and individuality.
We will pay particular attention to the proportions and shape of the chawan so that it is not only beautiful , but also functional for preparing matcha. A traditional matcha bowl needs enough width for the bamboo whisk, or chasen, to move freely. We will work towards a bowl of approximately 11–13 cm in diameter, with a well shaped interior that allows the whisk to move naturally across the bottom.
Alongside the chawan, you will make a chashaku, a small scoop used to take matcha powder from its container, and a handmade chasen holder for resting and maintaining the shape of the bamboo whisk. The pieces are designed as a complete set, bringing together the practical objects traditionally used in the preparation of matcha.
The workshop is an introduction to both the making and use of matcha ceramics. We will talk about the traditional way of crafting matcha bowl and how the shape of the chawan relates to the movement of the whisk and the experience of drinking from the bowl.
All clay, tools, glazing and firing are included. Your finished pieces will be glazed and fired at Estet Studio and can be collected once they are ready.
